Day 3 -- Sacramento to Auburn -- 55 Miles

Exciting day today -- once I rolled into "Old Town Auburn" I encountered the first "person" taller than I am (see above). So what if it's a statue of a gold miner from the 19th century? In all seriousness, not much to report. The first 30+ miles of the trek was on the Jedediah Smith Memorial Bikeway. It was nice to knock off some miles and not have to concern myself with vehicular traffic.

After the trail ended, I hit the SAG stop, and pedaled with a group of riders until I decided to pull off and take some pictures. My photos of the day can be found here. I apologize that they are not in chronolgical order, and will do my best to make sure it does not happen again.

After losing the group I had been riding with, I hammered away on my own. It was nice to have some time and be with my own thoughts, and climbing some of the hills solo was a nice prep for tomorrow's big day through the mountains.

As I approached Auburn, I stopped at a deli for a sandwich, and then made my way to the hotel.... or so I thought. I ended up taking some wrong turns and ended up in Old Town. In hindsight, it was for the best as I wanted to see it anyway. Eventually, I made my way back to the hotel, but stopped at a bike shop to pick up some odds 'n' ends.

Now, I am sitting in the hotel room, contemplating whether to take a nap, or hit the pool. Life is good!

  3. Will do, Cliff.

Dan, to answer your question: that guy with the microphone (Tony) is riding with his son, and it's part of the walkie-talkies that they brought along so they can communicate as they ride.
